UHEF Annual Scholarships

By: | Tags: , | Comments: 0

Each year the UHEF happily awards annual scholarships to college-bound seniors. The recipients are selected by the Counseling staff. Other awards were given, but these are the high-lights of Senior Awards night.

Two $1000.00 awards, for Outstanding Community Service during their high school career, are given directly by the Foundation and funded by YOUR donations. This year, TYLER JACKSON-ZENO volunteered for 663 hours at the Santa Monica Family YMCA, as a counselor in training. He will be going to Santa Monica College in September. JOSE ERNESTO LOPEZ, devoted 928 hours at Stoner Park Recreation Center as a staffer for 5 & 6 yr. olds. He will be going to Kalamazoo College in Michigan.

No one appreciated the financial struggles of today’s students more than the late SHARON MEDNICK who served as the college counselor from 1995 to 2003. Thanks to the generous $10,000.00 bequest from her estate, and the continuing annual donations from alumni, the UHEF continues bestowing the $1000 Sharon Mednick Scholarship to a student who demonstrates an interest in pursuing a career in education. This year, The award has gone to SUSANNA KIM. Susanna is going to Boston University and intends to get an Elementary School Credential. She plans on teaching either Kindergarten or 1st Grade.

Established four years ago and supported by former PTA president Melanie Rome, The University High School Character Counts Award for $500.00 has been given to WildCat Newspaper editor ELLI WEINSTOCK. Elli will be going to Hofstra University.

Although the UHEF has nothing to do with the other awards and scholarships to graduating seniors, it is noteworthy that the Senior Awards Ceremony recognized three Posse Scholars who will be going to the University of Wisconsin, Northwestern University and Kalamazoo College and a Questbridge Scholar who will attend the University of Chicago. Senior ANDREW ELLIOT received the UC Regents Scholarship for UCLA, the university’s most prestigious award. These are all full four-year scholarships.

Finally, the generous THELMA L. CULVERSON W’56 continues her support for Uni students and UCLA. SIERRA WILEY, class leader, member of Girls’ Varsity Volleyball and Track teams, 2012 representative to Girls’ State, is the recipient of the 16th TLC Award a, full four-year scholarship to UCLA.

Your support of the UHEF makes these scholarships possible. Please consider donating to these scholarships when you return your UHEF membership. The smiles on the faces of these seniors truly light up the room, and we look forward to supporting more Uni High graduates.
