[Posted January 7, 2016] Carolyn Vena S ‘56 – wildly named the “Cambodians” – has the details on their 60-year reunion:

“I would very much appreciate it if you would include information about the upcoming S’56 – 60th Reunion. The Cambodians will be celebrating on Saturday, June 4, 2016 starting at Noon at The Beach Club in Santa Monica. More information will be sent out at the beginning of February.

“The ‘Ad Hoc Committee’ has tried calling all of our classmates on the lists that we have. Sadly, they are greatly out of date. We need classmates to get in touch with one of the following people with current contact information:

Joel & Jacki Woolf:
(310) 536-4000
jackiwlax@aol.com

Dick Wollmer:
(714) 536-7685
RichardWollmer@csulb.edu

Carolyn Willis Vena:

“We will continue to include information in each report leading up to the reunion.”

Cambodians, get yourselves together!

Sorry I missed the 50th, but that doesn’t mean I have to miss the 60th! Plan to be there. I have been much more of an itinerant than I would have ever expected while at Uni. I married Virginia in 1970, and in 1983, we moved to Tyler in east Texas to raise our family. After retiring in 2011, we moved again in 2013 to St. Augustine, FL. We have a grandson who needed to go to the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine, and moving allowed us to pave the way for him. I am blessed to be able to serve as a deacon at the Catholic Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, the nation’s very first continuous, Christian parish which dates to Sept. 8, 1565. That is, when we are not otherwise involved in the lives of our other grandchildren in Anchorage and Greenwich, CT. I am looking forward to seeing all who attend.

visited Tyler a few times while oldest daughter lived there. Her kids started Catholic schools there, she formally converted, and they stayed in Catholic Schools as her husband changed jobs and locations several times, ending up, very happy, in Yankton, SD.

I wish I could come, if for no other reason than to see Carolyn Willis again. I told Dick Wollmer that I am at the end of my tether with health issues, some which should/may get better but it will be slow. I completely tore both left should rotator cuff muscles and recovery from that surgery is horribly painful, very long and slow and creates a host of new problems. Add to that an allergy induced but pretty severe vertigo problem – also should heal’
After UniHi I joined the army and went to Army Language School in Monterey. This was followed by an almost mythical adventure on small roving teams on mountain tops in Germany and one few month assignment in Sinop, Turkey – Where Caesar said, Veni, Vidi, Vici, a few years before I got there and where Diogenes went looking with his lantern for an honest man.
I then went to UCLA and earned a BA in History in 3 1/2 years. Not where else to go so I hung on as a professional student while working full-time at the Off-Street Detention Facility in East L.A.
Then joined the U.S. Foreign. Some of the assignments were dream jobs and places – Durban, London four years, Addis Ababa four years, Mexico, D.F. three years. Some were so so jobs but good places – Vienna, Bonn, Quito. One was a war zone – Monrovia, Liberia but also rewarding. Only did one long tour in DC in the Economic Bureau of the State Department and I liked that as well.
