A recent case in point: Uni’s Mednick College Center.

Started with a $50,000 grant from Steve Kirsch ‘74 and his wife Michelle through their Steve and Michelle Kirsch Foundation in 1999, and named for the late long-time Uni lead counselor, Sharon Mednick, the College Center’s infrastructure had faded over the past 15 years.

Last September, College Center Director Paula Van Norden sent an urgent letter to the UHEF, asking for help:

“The College Center currently has 12 computers (combination of Dell and Gateway) that are in poor or non-working condition. Many are the original computers that were installed when the College Center was remodeled. Others have been salvaged from the old computer lab and library.

“This is a request for new computers to assist the students who come to the College Center daily to work on their college and financial aid applications throughout the year.”

The bill was $12,551 for an updated set of 16 thin-client computers linked to two servers, providing state-of-the-art support on 20-inch monitors, which are now quite busy with student applications.

In addition, the UHEF contributed an additional $4,085 for the Naviance software suite, a comprehensive college and career readiness package designed to align student strengths and interests to their post-high school goals.

This is the critical work that the UHEF provides, making Uni a true link between education and advancement for its students. Since its formation in 1985, the UHEF has spent 82% of the more than $1.1 million it has raised for student scholarships and support for nearly every department at Uni.
