[Posted December 14, 2014] What is now University High School was originally Warren G. Harding High School, which opened in 1924. The name of the school was changed to recognize the opening of the new UCLA campus in nearby Westwood in 1929. Pictured above: The Honorary Diploma given to 103-year-old Hal Cunningham (Photo courtesy UHEF) Harold “Hal” Cunningham was born in 1911 and attended Harding High School in what was then known as the “Sawtelle” section of Los Angeles, beginning in 1926. Big changes as Uni’s new field and track under construction

By: | Tags: , , | Comments: 1

[Posted December 11, 2014] After all the politicking and promises, the conversion of Uni’s ancient, pitted football field and dirt track is now well underway. Ohno Construction, the contractor responsible for the job sent these now-and-then pictures, from September 10 as the work was just starting (below), and from November 19 (above). In the November photo, the clearance and grading of the field and track areas is nearly complete, ready for the next phase. Also of interest is the graded area behind the existing football-field bleachers, being cleared under a […]

[Posted November 27, 2014] Out of change comes opportunity. When the award-winning Santa Monica Chorus lost its long-time rehearsal home upon the retirement of its director, supporter and Uni Tech Arts Department Chair Danna Coonen-Lee asked Principal Eric Davidson if the group could use some space on campus. The answer was yes, and in return the Chorus is holding its winter concert at Uni’s Stivelman Theater at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 6. Half of all ticket sales will go to benefit the Uni Student Body Fund, up to $2,000 […]

Get it? (Photo courtesy Ivan Finkle/UHEF) “The show was a complete smash this last weekend,” exulted Uni Theater Arts director Ronnie Sperling ‘76. “The Friday [school] Assembly […]
